How did you get involved in the sport of adventure racing?
My friend Don Wahl, with whom I have run several marathons (including Boston 1996) had done eco-challenge Fiji and he encouraged me to try adventure racing. It seemed a perfect match for my interests in trail running and orienteering.
What are your interests?
- Outdoor activities (trail running, backpacking, skiing, mt. biking, kayaking, soccer, tennis)
- Listening to music
- Gardening
- Spending time with friends and my dog
- Working in the field of physical therapy
What do you enjoy most about adventure racing?
Challenging myself to do new things that I have never done and realizing that I can do them. Learning new skills like rappelling and night time navigation
What is the one thing you always carry with you in a race?
Extra gloves!
What would you like to see happen in adventure racing in the future?
More opportunities for intermediate level athletes to participate and succeed in 24 hour or longer races. Provide races that challenge an intermediate level athlete who may not have the skills to safely navigate a class III rapid or ascend a 1,000 ft rock face.
